Military electronics firm Harris Corp. of Melbourne, Fla., said Oct. 5 that it was adding broadband satellite data capability to its Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS)-approved Falcon 3 AN/PRC-117G wideband networking radio.
The radios currently operate within line-of-sight to connect tactical users on the battlefield to military commanders. The upgraded software will allow the Falcon 3 radios to be coupled with Harris’ Broadband Global Area Network terminals that use Inmarsat satellite services for beyond-line-of-sight communications, the press release said. The software has been certified by the National Security Agency to provide secure high-rate data, voice and video transmissions.
Future software upgrades will enable the radios to operate over the U.S. Navy’s Mobile User Objective System constellation, which is still in development, the release said.
