ABSL Space Products of Longmont, Colo., will design and build eight lithium-ion batteries for NASA’s Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission (MSS) under a multimillion-dollar contract the spacecraft battery maker announced July 1.
The two-year MMS mission is scheduled to launch in August 2014 and will employ four identical spacecraft designed to take unique measurements of the Earth’s magnetosphere.
ABSL said in a press release that the batteries it will design for MMS under the 39-month contract it was awarded June 14 by NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., will draw on the company’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and Global Precipitation Measurement mission battery heritage.
