Hughes Communications Inc. of Germantown, Md., has secured access to a pair of satellite orbital slots covering Brazil via an auction conducted by that country’s Anatel telecommunications regulatory authority, the company announced Aug. 31.
Through its HNS Americas Comunicacoes Ltda. subsidiary, Hughes secured access to the 45 degrees west and 68.5 degrees west longitude slots for broadcast satellite services in the Ka- and X-bands, the company said in a press release. The auction was held Aug. 30.
The press release did not say how much Hughes paid for the slots and gave no indication of the company’s plans for their development. Hughes, a provider of satellite-based broadband services and ground equipment, is a subsidiary of satellite operator EchoStar Corp. of Englewood, Colo.
