Brazilian officials say they are in talks to use Indian satellites to improve monitoring of the Amazon rain forest by allowing authorities to spot areas of deforestation much faster, the Associated Press reported Nov. 8.

Luis Maurano of Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research said he was confident a deal could be reached even though the negotiation was complicated. If not, Brazil will wait until the launch of a satellite in partnership with China at the end of 2012.
