Boeing Space and Intelligence Systems has delivered the first GPS 2F satellite to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, in preparation for a May launch atop a United Launch Alliance Delta 4 rocket.
The satellite was flown Feb. 11 from Boeing’s satellite manufacturing facility in El Segundo, Calif., to the Cape aboard a C-17 Globemaster 3 cargo plane.
Dubbed Space Vehicle 1, the just-delivered satellite is the first of 12 GPS 2F satellites Boeing is building for the U.S. Air Force.
Boeing says the GPS 2F system will provide twice the navigational accuracy of heritage satellites, more robust signals for commercial aviation and search-and-rescue, and greater resistance to jamming in hostile environments.
