Canadian Experiment Measures Radiation during spacewalks

Saint-Hubert, Quebec, October 18, 2001 – The Canadian Space Agency, in partnership with Thomson Nielsen of Ottawa, Ontario, has developed an experiment that will allow researchers, for the first time ever, to measure the level of radiation astronauts receive while they are working in the harsh environment of space. Extra-Vehicular Activity Radiation Monitors, or EVARM, will be carried into space during NASA’s next space shuttle launch, currently scheduled for November 29, 2001.

Canadian Space Agency Astronaut Chris Hadfield, the first Canadian to perform a spacewalk, will be joined by Mr. Ian Thomson, the President of Thomson Nielsen, in a Technical Briefing to explain how EVARM technology will benefit astronauts in space and be used on Earth as well.

Representatives of the media are invited to attend this Technical Briefing on EVARM. A prototype of the experiment will be on display.
