Saint-Hubert (Quebec), June 22, 2001 – Canadian Space Agency (CSA) President
Mac Evans will address participants on June 25, 2001, at an international
conference on how to better understand our planet through new technologies.

The conference, called Digital Earth, will be held from June 24 to 28 in
Fredericton, New Brunswick. It will address the cultural, scientific and
technical opportunities as well challenges citizens, scientists, planners
and policy makers face when accessing information about the Earth and
understanding the information, and how it influences the social, economic
and environmental issues that affect everyday lives in our neighbourhoods,
countries and on Earth in general.

“The Canadian Space Agency have taken a leading role in providing Canadians
and the world with images from space to help with everything from ice
mapping to managing disasters such as the Red River flood in Manitoba,
through our Radarsat program,” said Mr. Evans. “Canada is a world leader in
commercial space-borne radar technology and we hope to contribute to the
discussions on how to use this type of technology to better understand our
planet.”

The Canadian Space Program contributes to a better understanding of the
Earth’s environment as well as to a better management of its natural
resources by monitoring our planet from space and the effects of global
climate change. This is accomplished through the application of space-based
technologies and research from scientific data provided by Earth observation
satellites.
