Ottawa, May 22, 2001 – The Canadian Space Agency’s Space Science Program
announced today the names of two Canadian university students who have been
awarded a prestigious scientific scholarship to participate in a research
training program at NASA’s John F. Kennedy Space Center.

Jennifer Gelinas, of Edmonton, and Samuel Kohen, of Toronto studying in
Vancouver, were chosen from among nearly 60 candidates who applied from
across the country for the Canadian Space Agency’s Spaceflight and Life
Sciences Training Program Scholarship.

The scholarship allows the two university students to participate in an
intensive six-week research program at the John F. Kennedy Space Center, in
Florida, with 25 other students in Life Sciences, Bio-engineering and other
related fields. During the course of this program, the students will take
part in the conceptualization, preparation, pre- and postflight testing,
data analysis and report preparation phases of simulated space flight
experiments and in NASA Life Sciences research. They depart for Florida on
June 9, 2001.

Jennifer Gelinas is a second year student studying Honours Biochemistry at
the University of Alberta and hopes to conduct medically related space
research some day.

Samuel Kohen is a third-year science student at the University of British
Columbia. His most recent research experience has been examining
haematological research in the treatment of fetal Rhesus disease.

This is the fifth year that the Canadian Space Agency has sponsored students
who have demonstrated scholastic excellence and an interest in Space Life
Sciences to participate in this unique learning experience. The scholarships
are worth approximately $18,000 each and cover the travel, accommodation and
living expenses. Gelinas and Kohen bring the number of Canadian students who
have participated in this summer research program to nine.
