Saint-Hubert, November 29, 2000 – Tomorrow, students across Canada will
learn about CSA Astronaut Marc Garneau’s third flight to space. As Astronaut
Garneau will be preparing for launch, his colleague, CSA Astronaut Chris
Hadfield, will give an insider’s point of view on what astronauts go through
before a space mission. The presentation will be broadcast on the
SchoolNet/CSA Web page at 1:05 p.m. EST.
Young Canadians from all regions of Canada sent in questions on Garneau’s
flight. During the presentation, Astronaut Hadfield will answer a number of
those questions and also discuss the preparations and training of the
astronauts. “We hope that the excitement of space travel will inspire youth
to pursue their studies in science and technology”, said Chris Hadfield.
“Through the Internet, we are reaching students in schools from coast to
coast to coast.”
The special Webcast presentation is part of the Canadian Space Agency’s
youth Space Project 2000. This project uses Web-based activities designed
for students to help them better understand Marc Garneau’s mission including
scientific concepts like solar energy, an important element of the mission.
Through the CSA Internet site, students and teachers will find information
and learn about solar energy, the solar system and living and working in
space. “Space Project 2000 is designed to stimulate student’s interest in
space exploration” commented Mr. Evans, CSA President. “As the first
Canadian to fly to space, Marc Garneau remains a source of inspiration and a
model to Canadians of all ages.”
