ViaSat of Carlsbad, Calif., was awarded a $14.4 million task order from the U.S. Navy to provide Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) terminals for aircraft, according to a Jan. 20 ViaSat press release.
JTRS is a series of software-definable tactical radios being developed by the military services that will be able to operate with ultra-high frequency military satellite systems.
ViaSat was originally awarded an indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract from the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command in 2000 for Multifunctional Information Distribution System JTRS terminals. Under the new task order, the company will deliver 41 terminals for the F/A-18E/F fighter jets and E-8C Joint STARS aircraft. The terminals are undergoing security certification and are expected to be approved for use in February, the release said.
