Telesat and NSSLGlobal, a leading independent provider of satellite communications and IT solutions, have completed live testing with multiple government customers using Telesat’s Phase 1 Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite. By leveraging the ultra-low latency of Telesat’s LEO system, the companies demonstrated superior broadband performance – in terms of speed, latency and jitter – for high demand applications including 4K video conferencing, live video streaming, encrypted services for government use and live calling over mobile devices.

Satellite operators are now introducing a new generation of space-based networks, some of which will be in geostationary (GEO) orbit and some far closer to earth in LEO. Telesat is one of the few companies with significant experience in both orbits and is convinced that innovative LEO constellations can offer superior broadband services versus GEO systems. This recent round of live testing with NSSLGlobal, a longstanding Telesat partner, provides further confirmation that Telesat LEO’s patent-pending design will deliver the most secure, robust and resilient infrastructure for assured connectivity.

“NSSLGlobal’s success in serving some of the largest global commercial maritime fleets and European governments is driven by our unique combination of engineering expertise, growing portfolio of proprietary products, our own VSAT network and partnering with Tier 1 satellite operators like Telesat.” said Sally-Anne Ray, Group CEO, NSSLGlobal. “We’re looking towards the future and planning for what our clients will need in two, five, ten years and beyond and we believe the LEO constellation network will be a “game-changer” in the industry. That is why we’ve undertaken this early live testing at our UK headquarters of the Phase 1 Telesat LEO satellite supporting the next gen of services. It was a great opportunity for some of our key government clients to witness the outstanding broadband performance across a range of high demand applications and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. It’s an exciting time in the industry and we’re investing in the future needs of our clients.”

“NSSLGlobal leads the industry in providing advanced broadband connectivity for a host of fast growing commercial and government segments and Telesat is pleased to be partnering with them in optimizing the performance of Telesat LEO,” said Erwin Hudson, Vice President, Telesat LEO. “Telesat is known for giving our customers a competitive edge in the markets they serve, and the recent testing by our companies confirms that the ultra-low latency of Telesat LEO will assure a superior broadband experience comparable to terrestrial services.”

About Telesat LEO

Telesat’s LEO constellation will leverage the company’s global, priority spectrum rights in Ka-band and patent-pending LEO architecture to transform global communications. It will offer a combination of capacity, speed, security, resiliency and affordability with ultra-low latency that is equal to, or better than, the most advanced terrestrial networks. Able to serve the entire globe, Telesat LEO will help satisfy many of the world’s most challenging communications requirements. It will bridge the digital divide with fiber-like high speed services into rural and remote communities, accelerate 5G expansion and set new levels of performance for commercial and government broadband connectivity on land and in key maritime and aeronautical markets, which are among the fastest growing in today’s satcom industry.
