The New York Times, in an overview of NASA’s Commercial Crew Development (CCDev) program, quotes an unnamed Senate staffer as saying Congress will not grant NASA the $6 billion over five years that the space agency hopes to use to nurture development of privately operated vehicles for carrying astronauts to and from the international space station.

“The aide estimated commercial crew might receive half that much.”

The story takes a look at some of the companies completing for CCDev funding, with a special focus on Sierra Nevada, whose entry is based on a NASA horizontal-landing design whose roots go back to the Soviet Union.
