Are you a qualified physician? Would you like to gain insight into the field of space medicine? ESA is once again seeking medical doctors for its out-of-this-world training course and this is your chance to apply.
ESA’s annual two-day training course will be held online on 18 and 19 January 2022. It will cover how medical support is provided to ESA crew by the Space Medicine Team at ESA’s European Astronaut Centre (EAC) in Cologne, Germany, and provide opportunities to discuss the challenges physicians will face in support of exploration and commercial spaceflight in the future.
The digital format follows the success of ESA’s first online Space Physician Training Course (SPTC) in 2021 and is being implemented once more due to the ongoing pandemic. It enables those who otherwise may not be able to travel to attend and engage with experts and peers from all across Europe.
ESA astronaut Matthias Maurer refreshes his medical skills at ESA’s EAC ahead of his Cosmic Kiss mission ESA astronaut Matthias Maurer refreshes his medical skills at ESA’s EAC ahead of his Cosmic Kiss mission Throughout the two-day online programme, participants will have the opportunity to virtually attend presentations by ESA’s leading experts on the realities of supporting ESA astronauts’ health and well-being before, during and after their missions.
ESA flight surgeons and other members of the Space Medicine Team will discuss topics ranging from the challenges of the space environment and the physiological consequences it has on the human body, to countermeasures that are currently being employed or developed for future missions beyond Low Earth Orbit. As the opportunity to meet ESA’s experts is usually a key element of the programme, there will be plenty of time for questions and interaction after each lecture.
If you would like to join the SPTC online course on 18-19 January 2022, please apply by completing the online application form. Applications close midnight on Sunday, 10 October. If you have any questions concerning your application, please contact Mareike Morawietz from the Space Medicine Team.
