Hawaii Pacific Teleport of Kapolei, Hawaii, announced Dec. 7 the availability of what it says is the world’s only satellite communications service that connects the United States to Afghanistan using just one terrestrial hop, according to a Dec. 7 company press release.
The service, called Afghanistan Satellite, provides C-band capacity at speeds of up to 2 megabits per second to users with 2.4-meter antennas in Afghanistan and surrounding nations. The service has the lowest latency of any satellite connection between the United States and Afghanistan, the release said. Afghanistan Satellite uses the JCSAT 3A satellite at 128 degrees east operated by Sky Perfect JSAT Corp. of Japan and Hawaii Pacific Teleport’s Oahu, Hawaii-based teleport. The teleport is connected to the West Coast of the United States with high-speed underwater fiber.
