The Canadian Space Commerce Association (CSCA) presents the first Canadian SmallSat Symposium to be held February, 2-3 at the Novotel Toronto Centre hotel.
The CSCA is bringing together 200 people from industry, government, academia, the investment community and others interested in the growing Small Satellite, or SmallSat, segment of the space sector.
The global space sector in 2015 generated $330 billion in revenues. In the next 5 years according to a 2015 Euroconsult report on SmallSats, 510 SmallSats will be launched with a value of $7.4 billion. This figure does not include any of the planned large SmallSat constellations by OneWeb or SpaceX which would add several thousand more satellites and generate billions of dollars of additional revenue.
With changing and emerging new revenue streams at stake, this is clearly an opportunity for Canadian companies to showcase what they can do and how they can take advantage of the opportunity this market segments presents.
It’s important to understand the context of the dramatic shift in the space segment that is underway. There are currently over 1400 active satellites in orbit. The addition of 510 SmallSats and those of other large SmallSat constellations will have a profound affect on the market.
Several companies will be presenting their SmallSat constellations plans and updates including OneWeb and Canada’s own NorStar and UrtheCast.
OneWeb in particular has shaken up the marketplace. They plan on building a new global communications system of up to 900 SmallSats to create affordable broadband services. The goal is to provide reliable high-speed internet access to all communities around the world who don’t currently have access. In June of this year OneWeb announced it had received $500 million in funding from several prominent partners. This is a massive, ambitious project that will be catalyst for an ever expanding commercial space market. OneWeb’s founder, Greg Wyler will be the symposium’s first plenary speaker.
The Symposium will feature 8 plenary talks, 8 panel discussions and an additional 48 speakers discussing topics relevant to the SmallSat segment.
Notable plenary speakers include:
– Greg Wyler, Founder, OneWeb
– Sylvain Laporte, President, Canadian Space Agency
– Pete Worden, Chairman, Breakthrough Prize Foundation
– Wade Larson, CEO, UrtheCast
– Phillip Miller, Vice President, Operations and Engineering, exactEarth
– Robert, Zee, Director, UTIAS Space Flight Laboratory
– Luis Gomes, Director, Earth Observation and Science, SSTL
– Dave Anhalt, Vice President and General Manager, Iridium Satellite, LLC
Media are invited to attend and interviews, taped or live, on site or in studio, can be arranged with any of our speakers.
Media should register online through the Symposium website to attend.
About the Canadian SmallSat Symposium
The Canadian SmallSat Symposium builds on the heritage of past Canadian events including the Canadian Nanosatellite Workshop held in 2012.
The Canadian SmallSat Symposium is about opportunity, building capability and international partnerships. The demand for SmallSat’s is growing, especially at the micro and nano scale. To take advantage of this demand, the CSCA is bringing together stakeholders from across the country and inviting international participation to foster cooperation and market growth.
