MacDonald, Dettwiler and
Associates Ltd. (TSE: MDA) has been asked by the Canadian Space Agency to
evaluate the options for a Canadian Hyperspectral mission in space.
Hyperspectral sensors look at the Earth in hundreds of colours that can be
used to determine important information about natural resources and the impact
of mankind on the planet. In the current growing world market for space-based
Earth observation data, Hyperspectral products represent the next logical step
in monitoring and managing the world’s resources.
Applications such as geological exploration, environmental monitoring, forest
management and agriculture could benefit from Hyperspectral information that
would complement the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and Optical data already
available.
The Canadian Space Agency wants MDA to lead a team that will evaluate the
possibility of Canada building and operating a Hyperspectral instrument on
the International Space Station. Subsequently, (or alternatively), Canada
may participate in a dedicated Hyperspectral Earth observation mission.
The industrial team working with MDA is composed of EMS Technology, COMDEV,
ABB BOMEM, Routes AstroEngineering, Spectral Applied Research, and MD Space
and Advanced Robotics.
If the Hyperspectral mission proceeds, it will extend Canadian leadership in
the stewardship of our planet from space.
