Gaithersburg, MD – MDA Information Systems LLC (MDA-IS) today announced receiving research funding from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to develop a scalable, extensible, open source platform for data processing, archiving and dissemination. This contract is part of DARPA’s XDATA program, a 4-year research effort that seeks to develop new computational techniques and open source software tools for processing and analyzing data, motivated by defense needs. MDA-IS has been selected by DARPA as a performer in the technical area of data processing technology. The contract is administered by the Air Force Research Laboratory, Rome, NY.
Dr. Greg Koeln, the deputy general manager of this business unit said, “This work seeks to yield new technology for geospatial intelligence and related social media applications to the benefit of government and commercial customers.”
MDA-IS leads a team consisting of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), managed by the California Institute of Technology, and the Information Sciences Institute (ISI) at the University of Southern California Viterbi School of Engineering. MDA-IS’s approach is to use the Object Oriented Data Technology (OODT) pioneered at JPL. OODT, along with semantic workflow technology pioneered at ISI, give the MDA-led team an effective way to perform research in this area and then expeditiously apply its results to real world big data challenges faced by government and commercial organizations.
