Dr. Jacques Diouf, Director-General of
the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), today presented Intelsat with
the TeleFood Medal for “the most outstanding contribution to promoting the
concept of ‘food for all’ through involvement in the TeleFood program.”
Intelsat Senior Vice President, Corporate Services, Tony Trujillo, was
present at the World Food Day ceremonies at the United Nations in New York
to accept the award on behalf of the company.
In presenting the medal to Intelsat, the FAO has recognized the company’s
support of efforts to eradicate hunger and poverty within the international
community. Intelsat has provided satellite capacity free of charge to the
FAO to rebroadcast TeleFood’s global solidarity concerts for the last six
years.
In accepting the TeleFood Medal, Mr. Trujillo stated, “One hundred and sixty
million children under the age of five will go to bed malnourished tonight –
and 34,000 of those children will not wake up tomorrow. Intelsat, as a
member of the global community, understands the importance of supporting the
TeleFood campaign to alleviate world hunger. We are honored not only to
receive this award, but to play a role in such a worthwhile cause.”
