Intelsat announced today that at 2:45 a.m. EDT the Intelsat 901
communications satellite was successfully launched aboard an Ariane 44L
launch vehicle.

The first of the latest generation of Intelsat satellites, the Intelsat 901
features 72 C-Band and 22 Ku-Band high-power transponders (measured in 36
MHz equivalent units). The spacecraft will be deployed at 342*E in the
Atlantic Ocean Region, replacing the Intelsat 705 spacecraft. The 901 will
provide spot beam Ku-band coverage for Europe, as well as C-Band coverage
for the Atlantic Ocean Region.

The 901 will operate with a generic feed array, which is an ideal
configuration for its orbital location. With advanced features such as
selectable split uplink for SNG and Ku-Band overdrive control, the Intelsat
901 satellite is tailored for today’s communication demands. It will provide
Internet, video, and public switched telephone service for the Americas,
Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

The spacecraft is expected to commence commercial service in late October
