In advance of the upcoming release of U.S. President Barack Obama’s space policy, the Union of Concerned Scientists has posted a background paper predicting a kinder, gentler U.S. attitude in orbital affairs.
“If the administration’s public statements are any indication, the new policy likely will represent a return to a more international approach to space; a more balanced view of civil, commercial and military uses of space; and a greater openness to arms control and cooperative solutions to international space security issues.”
The new policy will supersede the 2006 policy signed by then-president George W. Bush, which wasn’t dramatically different from previous policies but nonetheless was criticized by arms control wonks for being unilateralist in tone.
