The runway at Spaceport America in New Mexico is heading toward completion with the multilayered landing strip’s first batch of concrete poured Feb. 11.
The 3,000-meter long runway, measuring some 60 meters wide, is made up of 60 centimeters of prepared subgrade followed by 10 centimeters of asphalt and topped with a 36-centimeter finish layer of concrete, according to a Feb. 15 news release from Spaceport America and the New Mexico Spaceport Authority.
The runway is designed to support flight operations for Virgin Galactic’sWhiteKnightTwo carrier aircraft and its SpaceShipTwo passenger-carrying suborbital vehicle.
David Montoya Construction Inc. of Alameda, N.M., is building the Spaceport America airfield.
Work also is under way on Spaceport America’s 10,000-square-meter Terminal Hangar Facility, according to the release.
