The U.S. Navy successfully test fired two Lockheed Martin-built Trident 2 D5 ballistic missiles from a submerged submarine in early September, Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Lockheed Martin Space Systems said in an Oct. 21 press release.
The three-stage, solid-propellant Trident missiles were fired Sept. 3 and Sept. 4 from the USS West Virginia in the Atlantic Ocean. The missile has a range of 7,400 kilometers and carries multiple independently targeted re-entry vehicles. First deployed in 1990, the Trident 2 D5 is currently aboard the U.S. Navy’s Ohio-class submarines and British Vanguard-class submarines.
Lockheed said in the release that the Trident 2 D5 missile has achieved 129 consecutive successful test flights since 1989.
