Ashton Carter, the Pentagon’s acquisition chief, was nominated by U.S. President Barack Obama to serve as deputy secretary of defense, the White House announced Aug. 2.
Carter has been the undersecretary of defense for acquisition, technology and logistics since 2009. If confirmed by the Senate, Carter will take over for William J. Lynn, who announced in July he plans to retire after serving as the Pentagon’s No. 2 civilian official since 2009.
