Lockheed Martin Space Systems on July 1 opened the doors to new facilities in Newtown, Pa., that include a 1,700-square-meter high bay addition that will be used for manufacturing GPS components, according to a company press release.
As the prime contractor for the U.S. Air Force’s next-generation GPS satellites, Lockheed Martin expanded Newtown’s Product Team Building to house a near-field antenna range, an antenna assembly clean room as well as a passive inter-modulation chamber to test the frequency bands of all components produced there.
The $24 million expansion project also included the construction of the nearly 1,400-square-meter multipurpose Patriot Center to facilitate large meetings such as spacecraft program design reviews and customer events. The meeting facility accommodates up to 250 people.
Lockheed Martin’s Newtown facility serves as the headquarters for Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems, the Air Force’s GPS 3 space segment program and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite R-Series program.
