The U.S. Air Force launched the second GPS 2F navigation spacecraft July 16 aboard a Delta 4 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla., the service announced July 16.
The spacecraft was placed into a circular orbit 17,600 kilometers above Earth and has transmitted signals indicating it is functioning normally, prime contractor Boeing Space and Intelligence Systems of Seal Beach, Calif., said in a July 16 press release. Boeing is under contract to deliver a total of 12 GPS 2F satellites to the Air Force, while the next-generation GPS 3 craft are being developed by Lockheed Martin Space Systems of Denver.
