Melbourne, Fla.-based Harris Corp. said Nov. 9 it had completed the systems requirement review for the ground segment it is building for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite R Series (GOES-R) program.
The envisioned ground system is expected to process 40 times more data than is possible today and deliver weather images to more than 10,000 direct users.
Harris is the prime contractor and systems integrator for the GOES-R ground segment under a 10-year, $736 million contract it won in May, beating a rival bid from Raytheon Intelligence and Information Systems of Garland, Texas.
Lockheed Martin Space Systems of Denver is building the GOES-R series of satellites, the first of which is scheduled for launch in 2015.
Harris’ teammates on the GOES-R ground segment program include Atmospheric and Environmental Research Inc., Boeing Mission Systems, Carr Astronautics, Honeywell Technology Solutions, Wyle Information LLC and Applied Research and Engineering Sciences.
