The New York Times reports that U.S. President Barack Obama will soon unveil his choices for key national security positions: Leon E. Panetta, the director of central intelligence, will be named defense secretary and Gen. David H. Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, will replace him as CIA chief, according to administration officials.
The appointments, which The Times says will be announced this week, result from the retirement of Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, who is expected to depart this summer.
