Colleen Hartman, a veteran NASA space science manager, is moving from NASA headquarters in Washington to the agency’s Goddard Space Flight Center in nearby Greenbelt, Md., where she will serve as deputy director for science, operations and program performance, NASA announced July 10.
Since returning to NASA last year following a stint at the George Washington University, Hartman served as the assistant associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate. Previous posts include NASA planetary science division director and deputy assistant administrator for satellite and information services at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
In her new role at Goddard, Hartman will assist in executive leadership and overall direction and management of the field center and its assigned programs and activities.
Goddard is leading development of the $8.8 billion James Webb Space Telescope mission and several Earth-observing satellites, including the Global Precipitation Measurement mission and IceSat-2. Goddard is also leading the acquisition of the U.S. Geological Survey’s Landsat Data Continuity Mission and NOAA’s Joint Polar Satellite System.
“I am delighted that Colleen has accepted this challenging position,” Goddard Director Chris Scolese said in a statement. “She has spent many years managing the technical progress and evaluating the performance of extremely complex scientific missions, so her experience will be invaluable to NASA and to the center.”
