Satellite on-board electronics manufacturer Kongsberg Norspace of Horten, Norway, will provide frequency converters and search-and-rescue transponders for eight European Galileo positioning, navigation and timing satellites under a contract with Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. (SSTL) of England valued at more than 10 million euros ($12.5 million), Kongsberg announced.
The contract brings to more than 30 million euros the value of the work Kongsberg is performing for Galileo. The company had previously won work from SSTL for 14 Galileo satellites as part of an initial order from the European Commission to Galileo prime contractor OHB AG of Germany. SSTL is OHB’s partner in the program and is responsible for the satellites’ payloads.
In addition to four validation satellites, built by a separate consortium, European governments have contracted for 22 Galileo spacecraft from the OHB-SSTL team.
