About the X PRIZE Foundation

The X PRIZE Foundation is a non-profit organization based in St. Louis, MO, which organizes prizes to create a new commercial approach to spaceflight. The X PRIZE is offering a $10 million purse to stimulate competition among the most talented entrepreneurs and rocket experts for the purpose of creating a new generation of launch vehicles. The X PRIZE Competition is modeled after the Orteig Prize, which Charles Lindbergh won for his New York-Paris flight in 1927. The Orteig Prize was one of hundreds of aviation incentive prizes offered early last century, which helped create today’s $300 billion dollar commercial aviation industry. To win the X PRIZE, a privately funded team must build and launch a spacecraft capable of carrying three people to space (an altitude of 100 km) on two flights within two weeks.
