The board of directors of the Space Foundation has elected William MacDonald “Mac” Evans to serve as a member of the board, effective April 26, 2002. Evans was elected to a three-year term as a director for the Colorado Springs-based, international non-profit organization.
Evans recently retired after serving as president of the Canadian Space Agency since 1994. A 34-year veteran of Canada’s Federal Public Service, he worked more than 30 years in the Canadian Space Program where his career included extensive experience in research, project management, policy development, international relations, and senior management in a number of federal departments.
“Mr. Evans’ leadership in the space community is well recognized around the world,” said Space Foundation President & Chief Executive Officer Elliot G. Pulham. “Mac brings tremendous international perspective and industry knowledge to our board.”
Evans’ major accomplishments include development of the 1985, 1994 and 1999 Space Plans that defined and obtained approval for the Canadian Space Program; negotiation of the arrangement for Canada’s participation in the International Space Station Program; and preparation of the proposal for the creation of the Canadian Space Agency. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Queen’s University, and a Master’s of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Birmingham in England, which he attended as an Athlone Fellow.
One of Evans’ first duties for the Space Foundation will be to serve as moderator for a high-level discussion among the heads of several leading national space agencies. The panel discussion will be a featured event at the upcoming International Space Symposium – co-hosted by the Space Foundation, the French National Space Agency CNES, and Space News. The global space conference, “Where Space Means Business,” will take place September 10-13, 2002 in Toulouse, France.
