VIENNA, 10 February (UN Information Service) — The United Nations
Office for Outer Space Affairs, in cooperation with the China National
Space Administration (CNSA), is pleased to announce an Exhibition on
“China’s Space Activities”. The Exhibition will be displayed from 17
February to 4 April 2003 on the occasion of the 40th session of the
Scientific and Technical Subcommittee and the 42nd session of the Legal
Subcommittee of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer
Space.
The Exhibition covers over 90 square meters and includes over 15 models
of rockets and satellites built and launched by China. It also displays 15
panels on China’s international and national space programmes.
Nine models of launch vehicles, ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 m in height,
show the evolution of the Long March (Chang Zheng) rocket programme, from
the Long March 1D to the Long March 3B. Among the launch vehicles on
display are the Long March 2C, which launched the Swedish/Germany
scientific satellite “Freja”, and the Long March 2F rocket which will carry
the first space explorer from China into space.
In addition, the Exhibition includes a 1:6 model of the Shenzhou
Spacecraft, which has completed four test flights.
The Exhibition, located in the Rotunda of the Vienna International
Centre, will be officially opened in a ceremony on 17 February 2003 at
13:15 hours by His Excellency Mr. Zhang Yan, Permanent Representative of
the People’s Republic of China to the United Nations and International
Organizations in Vienna, Mr. Luo Ge, Director-General, Department of
Foreign Affairs, China National Space Administration, and Mr. Sergio
Camacho-Lara, Director, United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs.
The Exhibition will be part of the tours provided by the UNIS Visitors
Service.
The CNSA will host, on behalf of the Government of the People’s Republic
of China, the 12th United Nations/European Space Agency Workshop on Basic
Space Science from 8-12 September 2003 in Beijing, People’s Republic of
China. This Workshop is China’s contribution for 2003 to the UN Programme
on Space Applications.
