The Satellite Industry Association (SIA) today announced that satellite-based data company Spire Global Inc. (Spire), has become the Association’s latest Executive Member.  Executive Members of SIA hold a seat on the Association’s Board of Directors with full voting privileges and Company representatives may be elected to serve as officers of the Association.  Spire is a leader in the small satellite market, offering a lineup of satellite-based meteorological, maritime, and aircraft monitoring products as well as hosted payload services.  To provide these services, Spire has a growing satellite constellation and global ground station network.  As of today, it has manufactured and deployed 50+ low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites and operates 25 ground stations globally.  Spire recently successfully completed the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Commercial Weather Data Pilot and announced satellite data agreements with other organizations to improve maritime domain awareness and track and monitor global commercial fishing activity.

“SIA is very pleased to welcome Spire and their small satellite and global data network expertise to the Association’s executive board,” said Tom Stroup, SIA’s President.  “Small or nanosatellite innovation is compelling and the market for services generated by such spacecraft is growing as demonstrated by Spire’s commercial weather data agreement with NOAA and recent announcement regarding global maritime vessel monitoring. The addition of Spire and other companies who have launched, or are planning to launch, multiple small and nanosatellite LEO constellations further strengthens SIA’s role of effectively advocating on behalf of the entire U.S. satellite industry regarding policy, regulatory, and legislative matters.”

“Collaboration is as important today as it has ever been in the satellite industry, so we’re incredibly excited to be contributing our unique experience in nanosatellites and earth observation issues as an Executive Member. Spire looks forward to helping shape a holistic industry perspective as the US and other administrations begin contemplating changes to licensing regimes, spectrum management, and orbital debris rules,” added Peter Platzer, Spire’s CEO. “Spire is excited to take the next step in our growth as a leader in commercial satellite technology and help shape industry positions for years to come.”

SIA is a full-service trade association that represents commercial satellite companies as the unified voice of the U.S. satellite industry on policy, regulatory and legislative issues affecting the satellite business.  For more information regarding SIA membership and a complete list of SIA member categories and benefits, please click HERE
