NOTE TO PHOTO EDITORS: 300 dpi resolution images of Davenport and Rock Island available on the web for illustration and publishing purposes at Davenport, Iowa and Rock Island, Illinois (Quad Cities Mississippi Flooding)
This one-meter resolution satellite image of the Quad Cities area was collected by Space Imaging’s IKONOS satellite on April 27, 2001. The image shows flooding along the Mississippi River and downtown Davenport to the north (top of image).
Shown in the image are the submerged John O’Donnell Stadium and the President River Boat Casino. The Centennial Bridge connects Davenport to Rock Island to the south (bottom of image).
Along the Rock Island shoreline east (right) of the bridge is another riverboat, Jumer’s Casino. Imagery collected after severe flooding could be used to assess damaged buildings and houses, destroyed streets and highways, flattened trees and damaged utility facilities. During a crisis, emergency response agencies can even plan evacuations, recovery operations and established victim relief centers.
IKONOS travels 423 miles above the Earth’s surface at a speed of 17,500 miles per hour. The 1600-pound satellite was launched in Sept. 1999 and is own and operated by Space Imaging in Denver, Colo.
