Space Imaging, the world’s leader in providing Earth imagery and related services to commercial and government markets, and Veridian today announced the release of an image base product which uses the National Imagery and Mapping Agency’s (NIMA) Controlled Image Base® (CIB®) format specifications. The image base product is the first to use unclassified, one-meter resolution commercial satellite imagery as a source for the data. CIB is a National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) registered trademark product. The image base product will be available later this summer to sophisticated government customers who require CIB® formats.

The image base product is a contiguous, digital database of orthorectified, grayscale (black-and-white) imagery. The image base product has been developed in one-, two-, five- and 10-meter resolution formats with IKONOS supporting the one-meter imagery. Additional products may be offered as the database evolves to other resolutions.

Image base products are derived from processing Space Imaging’s IKONOS one-meter resolution imagery with Veridian’s GeoWorxTM ortho image production software. 11 bit per pixel, one-meter imagery in National Imagery Transmission Format (NITF) is ingested into the GeoWorx software. The data is reprocessed to an 8-bit format and orthorectified using a digital elevation model (DEM) to remove terrain distortions. It is radiometrically balanced and mosaicked before being formatted to the CIB® specification. The formatted frame files of imagery are arranged in a directory by one-degree cells, though smaller areas can be ordered.

“This new product, designed specifically for government and military users, has the potential for worldwide coverage. These products support a variety of mission planning programs, including weaponry, C3I theater battle management, digital moving map, terrain analysis, simulation and intelligence systems,” said Brian Soliday, executive vice president of Global Products and Services for Space Imaging. “We are pleased with GeoWorx’s capability to produce new product solutions as the market evolves and demand for high-end, orthorectified imagery increases.”

“GeoWorx is a family of commercially available software solutions designed to handle the metadata required for processing comprehensive formats such as NIMA’s CIB®,” said Brian Morra, president, Information Systems Sector, Veridian Systems. “With the future in mind, we designed GeoWorx with the flexibility to use a variety of commercial satellite data sources, including IRS, RADARSAT, and Landsat.
