News from the 16th Annual National Space
Symposium
Colorado Springs, Colo. (February 18, 2000) –
Space Foundation officials announced today that
The Sea Launch Company has been selected to
receive this year’s General James E. Hill Space
Achievement Award. Sea Launch was selected for
their outstanding demonstration of the
possibilities for international, commercial
collaboration in the post-Cold War space
industry.
The award will be presented as part of the
Opening Ceremony at the 16th Annual National
Space Symposium, the evening of April 3, 2000,
in Colorado Springs. The National Space
Symposium is sponsored by the Space Foundation.
Widely regarded as the premier annual space
forum, this weeklong event features top national
and international speakers addressing critical
civil, commercial and national security space
issues.
Sea Launch’s inaugural launch on March 27, 1999,
and equally successful first commercial launch
of the DIRECTV 1-R broadcast satellite on
October 9, 1999, validated the program concept
and demonstrated overall system capability. The
Sea Launch joint venture combines the expertise
of international aerospace and maritime
companies to provide commercial launch services
from an ocean-based platform in the Pacific
situated on the equator. Partners in the Sea
Launch consortium are: Boeing Commercial Space
Company of Kent, WA; the Anglo-Norwegian
Kvaerner Group of Oslo, Norway; RSC Energia of
Moscow, Russia; and KB Yuzhnoye/PO Yuzhmash of
Ukraine.
The Space Foundation annually recognizes an
individual or organization that has demonstrated
lifetime achievement, breakthrough space
technology, or program or product success deemed
to represent a critical milestone in the
evolution of space exploration and development.
Previous recipients of the award include the
NASA/Boeing International Space Station Team,
General Thomas S. Moorman, Jr., and Capt. James
Lovell, Commander, Apollo 13.
