Sally Ride Science, a leader in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education, will give a boost to science teaching and student achievement in mid-Atlantic classrooms this month, thanks to support from the Northrop Grumman Foundation.
The Sally Ride Science Educator Institute, set for Sept. 22 at the National Electronics Museum in Linthicum, Maryland, will bring together 50 educators and administrators from various districts for a day of professional development. Participating districts include Prince George’s County Public Schools and Harford County Public Schools in Maryland and Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia.
Participants in the one-day training will learn how to ignite student interest in STEM through engaging techniques that connect standards-based content with current topics, STEM career paths, and examples of diverse scientists working in the field today.
“The benefits of exciting students about science extend far beyond improved test scores,” said Dr. Karen Flammer, co-founder of Sally Ride Science. “We want to help teachers get their students thinking about their futures and the possibilities that exist for them in STEM careers. We’re thrilled to partner with the Northrop Grumman Foundation to empower both teachers and their students.”
Educators will receive professional development credit along with Sally Ride Science Cool Careers in STEM books and other resources that they can immediately incorporate into classroom instruction to enhance learning. Sally Ride Science faculty, comprised of nationally recognized current and former teachers, will lead the training.

An additional Sally Ride Science Educator Institute, also sponsored by Northrop Grumman Foundation, will be held on Oct. 13 in Redondo Beach, Calif.
