Congressman Bill Posey (R-Rockledge) has written to leaders of the House Appropriations Committee requesting the Committee provide equitable treatment for contract employees in crafting appropriations bills to open government agencies. Unlike civil servants, government contractors have not traditionally received back-pay and benefits upon reopening the federal government.
“We depend on both civil service employees and contract employees to run our government and deliver its services,” said Congressman Posey. “During a shutdown, contract employees face the same hardships as civil service employees like keeping up on rent and mortgage, buying food and health care. There’s no basis for treating contract employees differently when a government shutdown has ended and the government has reopened.”
