Democrats on the U.S. House Science, Space and Technology Committee selected Rep. Jerry Costello (D-Ill.) March 28 to serve as ranking member on the space and aeronautics subcommittee.

Costello was named the subcommittee’s acting ranking member after Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) was shot during a constituent meeting in Tucson in January 2011. Giffords, the wife of former NASA astronaut Mark Kelly, resigned from Congress this past January.

Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (D-Ore.) was chosen March 28 to fill Gifford’s vacancy on the House Science, Space and Technology Committee. Bonamici will serve on the research and science education subcommittee and the technology and innovation subcommittee.
