The Planetary Society applauds the appointment of S. Alan Stern as Associate Administrator for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA. NASA Admistrator Mike Griffin announced his appointment Monday, February 12, 2007.
Louis Friedman, Society Executive Director, said “We wish Alan the best and thank him for taking on the difficult task of government service. As leader of the US program of space science, he will face many challenges and many opportunities. New worlds beckon, and we look forward to working with him to advance their exploration.”
The Planetary Society fought alongside Stern for a mission to Pluto. The New Horizons mission is now en route to Pluto and the outer reaches of the solar system, and Stern is the Principal Investigator.
