The Disaster Monitoring Constellation of small, low-orbiting satellites was formed in 2004 around small-satellite specialist Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. (SSTL) of Guildford, England. The governments of Algeria, Britain, China and Nigeria contributed their satellites to the constellation, and the privately funded Deimos of Spain later agreed to put its SSTL-built satellite into the mix.

Globecomm Systems in the past four years has transformed itself from a company building satellite Earth stations and performing some value-added services on the side to one whose business is mostly managed network services. Building Earth stations remains a core competency for the company, but the recent revenue and profit growth is coming from the services side, mainly through contracts with the U.S. government.

Roger-Maurice Bonnet, Executive Director, International Space Science Institute

Roger-Maurice Bonnet is ending his second and final four-year term as president of the Committee on Space Research (Cospar) on a high note. The 38th Cospar Assembly, held in July in Bremen, Germany, broke attendance records set in 2004 in Paris, attracting some 3,800 space scientists from around the world. Especially notable was the substantial Chinese and Indian presence, with the two nations just behind the United States in terms of submitted papers.
