Mainstream Space

I
t is now more than
50 years since the dawn of the space age, and even today much of space activity remains the monopoly of governments and their sensitive defense establishments. Space exploration budgets are closely tied to defense and intelligence pursuits, and their budgets are all linked in some way, shape or form. Indeed, it is correct to say that space activity is a niche human endeavor and not yet fully integrated into the mainstream of peaceful, sustainable, progressive human activities.

OpEd: After the A-Sat Tests

Destructive anti-satellite (A-Sat) tests are rare. The Pentagon’s destructive anti-satellite test in February followed 13 months after
China
used one of its aging satellites for target practice. The previous voluntary, global moratorium on destructive A-Sat testing lasted 22 years. Because tests that blow up satellites are so rare, they are important indicators of space security. They make all spacefaring nations less confident about the security of vulnerable satellites that are essential for national and economic security.
