Is It Time To ‘Get Real’ about Space Traffic Management?

On a typical day there are about 29,000 commercial air flights in the U.S. and a total of 87,000 private, cargo and commercial flights, according to the National Air Traffic Controllers Association. Worldwide the numbers are less specific but the total of all flights is likely to be well over 200,000 — maybe even a quarter-million each day. The remarkable thing about these air flights is their overall safety — over a billion miles flown per fatality.

The Spaceship Company Gets $290K from California for Energy-efficient Hangar

The Spaceship Company (TSC), the Virgin Galactic and Scaled Composites joint venture building Virgin’s SpaceShipTwo suborbital spaceplane, received a $290,000 incentive check from Southern California Edison for designing a final integration, assembly and test hangar — FAITH, for short — in Mojave, Calif., that exceeds the state’s energy-efficiency standards, according to a March 12 press release.
