Orbital Sciences Corporation
today announced that Dr. Robert E. Lindberg has been named Senior
Vice President for Defense Programs, a newly formed position that will provide
strategic direction and coordination of the company’s business development
activities in the areas of military space systems, missiles defense systems,
classified programs and defense-related technical services.

Dr. Lindberg is an Orbital veteran with more than 14 years of experience
with the company, having served in senior-level positions in program and
operating group management and in business development.
His tenure with the
company has been nearly evenly divided between the satellite and launch
vehicle business units, Orbital’s two largest product areas.
Prior to joining
Orbital, Dr. Lindberg spent 10 years at the Naval Research Laboratory, where
he conducted and led research in advanced space technologies.

Mr. David W. Thompson, Orbital’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer,
said, “With the increased national focus being placed on missile defense and
military space systems by the Bush Administration, it is important that
Orbital play a significant role in helping our country achieve these
priorities.
Orbital’s wide array of satellite platforms, space launch
vehicles, and missile defense targets, combined with our exemplary record of
reliability and our commitment to affordability, should make the company a
strong competitor for many of the programs now being initiated by the U.S.
Department of Defense.”

Mr. Thompson added, “Dr. Lindberg is exceptionally qualified for his new
role in spearheading our business pursuits in the defense arena.
With Bob’s
strong combination of hands-on management experience, top-notch credentials as
an aerospace engineer, and proven experience as a businessman who understands
the importance of developing profitable new opportunities for the company,
Orbital is on the right path to achieving our strategic objectives in the
space-related defense market.”

Dr. Lindberg holds a B.S. degree in Physics from Worcester Polytechnic
Institute, an M.S. in Engineering Physics from the University of Virginia and
a doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from Columbia University.

Orbital develops and manufactures affordable space systems, including
satellites, launch vehicles, sensors and electronics, and advanced systems.
Orbital is also involved with satellite-based networks that provide wireless
data communications and high-resolution Earth imagery to customers all around
the world.
