Reston, Va.-based Optimal Satcom will provide enterprise capacity management systems to startup satellite broadband wholesaler O3b Networks and its customers under a strategic partnership the two companies announced June 14.
As part of the strategic partnership, Optical Satcom will customize its Enterprise Capacity Manager software system to support the Ka-band satellite constellation O3B is building in medium Earth orbit. Because O3b’s satellites will operate significantly closer to Earth than geostationary satellites (8,000 kilometers versus 36,000 kilometers) the latency, or time it takes for signals to travel to the satellite and back, will be reduced.
O3B Networks plans to launch its first eight high-throughput Ka-band satellites in 2013 followed by another four satellites by the end of 2014.
