A new educational facility, the Texas Learning and Computation Center
(TLC2) located at the University of Houston, will be officially opened
in a ceremony beginning at 9:30 a.m. CST Feb. 19. The center results
from a partnership involving NASA’s Johnson Space Center, government and
private industry.
The unique resources contained in the Texas Learning and Computation
Center include high-tech classrooms, research facilities and high-speed
computers that will be used by private industry and NASA to provide
workforce development through distance learning. University of Houston
students also will make use of the center’s unique capabilities.
Distance learning events will take advantage of state-of-the-art
networking and videoconferencing equipment, as well as the ability to
manipulate 3-D images on high- resolution, large-format monitors to
share the excitement of science and technology with students.
Located in Philip Guthrie Hoffman Hall on the UH campus, the center was
initially established in September 1999 with funding from the Texas
Legislature and a nearly $4- million facilities grant from NASA. Other
federal, state and local agencies are supporting individual projects and
the center’s infrastructure. More than $22 million in research funding
is associated with programs, institutes and centers supported by the
Texas Learning and Computation Center.
