CLEVELAND — One hundred students who participated in NASA’s Summer of Innovation program will celebrate the program’s accomplishments with a day of special activities at NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland on Friday, Oct. 15 beginning at 10:40 a.m.

The students, coming from Michael R. White Elementary School in Cleveland and several schools and student organizations in Grand Rapids, Mich., will receive a welcome from Robyn Gordon, Glenn’s director of Center Operations; participate in a science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, career roundtable discussion with Glenn researchers and scientists at 11 a.m.; and attend an astronaut briefing with veteran astronaut Mike Foreman at 12:45 p.m. A tour of different Glenn facilities will take place from 2:10 to 2:40 p.m.

The day’s highlights will conclude with a visit to the Great Lakes Science Center to view the OMNIMAX film “Hubble” at 4 p.m.

Additionally, students from Albany, Ga., Chicago, Miami and New York will be able to participate in the career roundtable discussion and Foreman’s briefing via the Internet.

The main goal of Summer of Innovation was to reach students living in areas that are underserved or underrepresented, or where students are underperforming in STEM curriculum. The program used NASA content during the summer months when many students experience what’s known as “summer slide” — a loss of skills acquired during the school year.

Glenn’s Summer of Innovation activities included collaborations and partnerships with NASA’s Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Aerospace Academy sites, school districts, universities and non-profit organizations.

Glenn provided more than 1,200 middle school students and 30 teachers from Ohio, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, New York and the District of Columbia with intensive and interactive STEM educational experiences.

Reporters interested in attending the program may contact Sandra Nagy at 216-433-9079 or Sandra.L.Nagy@nasa.gov by 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 15 to obtain security clearance.
