NASA received three Webby Awards and was honored as the People’s Voice winner in two categories in the 2021 Webby Awards competition. The awards, given by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, recognize the best in online communications.

NASA’s three Webby winners are:

  • Exoplanet Exploration, exploring the science of planets outside our solar system, for Website and Mobile Site: Science.

  • Eyes on the Earth, showing global climate change in real time, for Website and Mobile Site: Data Visualization.

“We are doubly honored with these awards,” said Marc Etkind, NASA’s associate administrator for communications. “It’s great to have our work selected by the Webby judges, but the public is our ultimate audience, so it’s just as gratifying to be recognized by them for our efforts to share the excitement of exploration, both of the cosmos and our home planet, across all our platforms.”

Managed by the Office of Communications, NASA’s social media presence extends across multiple platforms, including Twitter (46.6 million followers), Facebook (26 million followers) and Instagram (66 million followers). The effort has received four previous Webby Awards and three People’s Voice awards.

NASA’s Eyes on the Earth is just one of the many web-based visualization products offered to the public at https://eyes.nasa.gov. NASA’s Eyes allows users to take a ride on multiple NASA satellites and examine our planet’s health from outer space, in real-time, from any internet-connected web browser. View both current and past Earth science data projected on a 3-D interactive globe, including global temperature, sea level, and carbon dioxide concentrations and see latest events observed from space, such as wildfires, hurricanes, and dust storms. Eyes on the Earth was a website honoree in 2013. The Eyes team is based at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California.

NASA’s Exoplanets website shares the science behind the search for and discovery of worlds beyond our solar system. It is managed by the Exoplanet Exploration Program and JPL for NASA’s Astrophysics Division. This is the fourth Webby nomination and second win for the exoplanets website.

NASA had three additional nominees and an honoree:

  • #LaunchAmerica – NASA’s multi-platform campaign, beginning with NASA’s SpaceX Demo-2 mission: American astronauts launching on American rockets from American soil for the first time since 2011. (Category: Social Content Series and Campaigns, Events and Livestreams)

  • NASA STEM@Home – Bringing learning and fun to students at home as the COVID-19 pandemic closed schools through much of 2020. (Websites and Mobile Sites)

  • The Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate’s social media, using the latest channels on behalf of aeronautics, “the first ‘A’ in NASA.” (General Social, Education & Discovery)

The Hubble Space Telescope program’s Instagram video “Hubble and Whale Sharks” was an honoree in the Social Video, Education & Discovery category.
