HAMPTON, Va. – The Peninsula’s largest lighted holiday parade will feature NASA astronaut Dr. Anna Fisher as its Grand Marshal.
On Saturday Dec. 11, the city of Hampton will celebrate the finale of its 400th anniversary with its annual Holly Days Parade. This year’s theme is “From the Sea to the Stars 1610-2010.”
Fisher was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in January 1978 and has logged nearly 200 hours in space. She became the first mother to go to space. From 1996-2002, she was Chief of the Space Station Branch during early construction of the International Space station. Fisher currently serves as Management Astronaut in both the Space Shuttle Branch and the Exploration Branch.
The Hampton Holly Days Parade begins at 7 p.m. The parade begins at Eaton Street, proceeds down Settlers Landing Road and ends at Darling Stadium. In addition to Fisher’s appearance, the parade will feature elaborate floats, marching bands, dancers and will conclude with fireworks. The event is free and open to the public.
Fisher will be available for autographs from 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the corner of King Street and Settlers Landing Road near the Virginia Air & Space Center.
