On Wednesday, Aug. 30, NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, will conduct an active shooter exercise from 9 to 9:45 a.m. The event is closed to the media, public and employees not participating.
“We doubt that any of our exercise will be overheard or otherwise noticed outside our gates. However, we’re issuing this advisory to minimize the possibility that the exercise is interpreted as anything but an exercise,” said Langley spokesman Rob Wyman.
Exercise participants will include volunteers, uniform and plainclothes members of Langley security, and the Hampton and NASA fire departments and emergency medical services personnel. The exercise will include the use of simulated firearm ammunition and firearm blanks.
The exercise is to evaluate the center’s Active Shooter Plan for consistency of training, familiarization with other organizations and agencies in the area, mutual aid and resource mobilization, and facilitation of a smooth and coordinated effort should an active-shooter or mass-casualty incident occur at NASA Langley.
Signs are being posted around the exercise area to alert employees and visitors. In addition, radio calls, emailed communications and posts to the web or social media will include “exercise-exercise-exercise” and should not be taken as a real-world event.
